Where is the Internet?
You probably use the Internet every day. But does the Internet physically exist? In reality, every e-service and every bit of information in it has to be physically located somewhere. As a rule, servers and connected IT devices are what accept, process, store, and provide information. These devices are, in turn, located in data centers.
Our modern way of life relies on data center cybersecurity, with human errors remaining the biggest threat
Everything on the internet must physically reside somewhere, and data centers as critical infrastructure provide a secure and controlled environment for housing and managing vast amounts of sensitive and valuable information. While data centers as infrastructure service providers themselves do not directly protect the data of clients, as they lack the authority to interfere in the exchange of bits and bytes over the internet, they are responsible for safeguarding their own operations – that is mission-critical for their clients. The infrastructure, IT systems, and employees of data centers are often targets of cyber attacks, presenting a potential threat to our modern way of life.
How to grow into a pan-European business with the help of a smart IT solution and reliable infrastructure?
How to grow into a pan-European business with the help of a smart IT solution and reliable infrastructure? We asked Siim Täkker, CEO of R8 Technologies, what was the secret of their success, how did their growth depend on the IT infrastructure, and how they have benefited from moving their systems and data to a top-class data center.
Five myths about data centers! Is cloud storage really replacing data centers?
In summary, even if there is some truth to the myths surrounding data centers, the stories have been mostly ‘lost in translation’. Cloud storage will not lead to the extinction of data centers; the energy-efficient storage of data in data centers will not cause an energy crisis; a data center can be used even when only a few device cabinets are needed; and certainly not everyone can set up a proper, reliable, and secure data center.
‘There are many outdated server rooms in Estonia.’ How to get in shape for a hot summer?
Last July, the more than 40-degree heat knocked out the data centers of Google in London – cooling systems proved inadequate, with the outage also affecting websites hosted by WordPress across Europe. If even data centers specifically designed to house servers cannot withstand heat waves, you can only imagine what this means for those that store servers on their own premises, for example, in office buildings with no suitable conditions.
Why did the Estonian IT company with the highest recommendation index decide to use the services of GDC?
We asked Martin Luhari, Head of the Data Center and Cloud Services at OIXIO, how the choice between different data centers was made, what moving to a world-class complex entails for an already thriving business, and how to move IT infrastructure painlessly from one location to another.
INTERVIEW with Tõnu Grünberg, head of the largest data center in the Baltics: how to find customers in difficult times?
A year ago, the largest data center in the Baltics opened its doors outside Tallinn. The opening coincided with Russia’s war in Ukraine, the pan-European energy crisis, and the chip shortage. Tõnu Grünberg, CEO, talks about how GDC has coped with the challenges and what the new year will bring.
Artificial intelligence makes data centers look like science fiction movies, but it comes at a cost
Airplanes are already practically flying themselves and we are very close to having self-driving cars. This is all becoming a reality thanks to the wider application of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Will the same fate befall the data centers that underpin our e-societies? Will our digital infrastructure start to think for itself and become ‘self-sufficient’?
Where is the world’s largest data center?
Where is the world’s largest data center? The question sounds fairly easy, so you might think the only thing between you and the answer is a quick Google search. The reality, however, is far more complicated, as data centers tend to be quite secretive about their sizes.
INTERVIEW: the heat generated by our data center could warm thousands of homes
As the heating season has begun, many are concerned about how to get their homes warm and how much it all might cost. In Hüüru, in the vicinity of Tallinn, however, there is a high-tech building which has heat to spare. Kert Evert, chief development officer of Greenergy Data Centers, tells us what excess heat is and how data centers will become part of our heating solutions in the future.
